I'd missed the inaugaural re-opening of the EASC at Peterborough City Club, as I had been talking to some people on other boards, one couple going to Ilkeston last Friday and a small group from Derby and Burton doing a Derby night on the Saturday, lending itself to a visit home for the weekend with a Midlands double, or even triple as those going to Derby had said they wouldn't be there until after 10pm, so I even did Mansfield's Kingsway again for "early doors".
So part 1 being Ilkeston where I'd first been last Boxing Day. If you don't know this venue it actually has 4 rooms, a "Motown" room near the entrance plaing mainstream Motown and other well known stuff, non-soulies do come, perhaps they made this an intentional "feeder", which would be doing its job even if only a few make the transition from "non" to "new" soulie. Then the main Northern room, and upstairs a main Modern room and one they were using for Jazz Funky stuff this time but I think has previously been used for "Connoisseur" sounds before. I'd stayed in the main Northern room most of the night, unusually there only seemed be one DJ for the whole evening. He grouped tunes together well, a set of oldies, series of more R&B type, then what you might call "forgotten oldies". Good social atmosphere all round too, this night runs on last Fridays of the month bar December when it will be Boxing Day instead like last year when I went for the first time.
