Quickly caught up with most fellow Peterborough and district regulars after arriving, after finding a table with a few of them soon got dancing. There was more chart Motown on the playlist, I had expected that anyway, took me "back to the roots" of my interest in Northern. Came back out to the reception desk area to have a break and talked more to Paddy Grady then big surprise, Stef Malajny roped me in for an interview to put on his DVD.
Just after 11 backing band Soul Patrol came on stage to start the live show with the Velvelettes joining them about 10 minutes later. They were well and truly on form right from the start, Really Saying Something was played early on to set a party mood and the Northern classic These Things Will Keep Me Loving You shortly afterwards, though I'd have expected this to be nearer the end. Good to hear Lonely Lonely Girl and A Bird in the Hand and the nice ballad Twilight Time that I didn't know, also Everybody Needs Love, most famous for Jimmy Ruffin's hit version. Needle in a Haystack was to be the grand finale and they encouraged a fair amount of audience participation. When they left the stage with the backing band still playing the audience called for more, back they came with "Motown Anthem" Dancing in the Streets as a fine encore.
With the main show over, talking around I heard the group would be coming out to the foyer to sign items, my friend Marilyn had a poster while the cameraman from Northampton had photos to sell for a fiver so I bought one. It was nice to say hi to them in person and get this signed to round off an excellent night and remember it by for many years to come.
